Introduction

The placenta and fetal membranes may get infected in several ways:

ascending infection
hematogenous spread
by straight infection of the uterine cavity (after invasive interventions, e.g. amniocenthesis, amnioscopia, cordocentesis); rare complication
by straight spread of the infection from the endometrium (rarely)
