5.19  Metabolic and nutrition problems

5.19.1  Pellagra

Etiology:

Deficiency of niacin.

Clinical signs:

  • alcoholics, anorectic patients, patients treated with isoniazid
  • complex of changes (dermatitis, diarrhea, dementia)
  • location: sun exposed areas
  • erythema, sometimes vesicles; later scaling, epidermal atrophy

Histology:

Upper layers of the epidermis are pale; parakeratosis; variable acanthosis; variable superficial lymphohistiocytic infiltrate; dermal fibrosis.
