7.2  Non-epithelial cysts, pseudocysts

7.2.1  Ganglion, synovial cyst

Clinical signs:

  • small pseudocyst, often preceeded by some trauma
  • location: extremities, near joints

Histology:

The wall of the synovial cyst is formed by fibrous tissue, contains amorphous, often myxoid material.

7.2.2  Digital mucous cyst

Clinical signs:

  • location: dorsal aspects of interphalangeal joints
  • translucent small cysts

Histology:

The cyst of dorsal aspects of the fingers, containing mucinous fluid. The wall is formed by the connective tissue, no epithelial lining (pseudocyst, ganglion).

7.2.3  Mucocele

Clinical signs:

  • pseudocyst of the lip, tongue or buccal mucosa
  • in the vicinity of (small or large) salivary glands

Histology:

Pseudocyst with no lining, appears after the rupture of stasis of the secret of a salivary gland. Often accompanied by the inflammation.

7.2.4  Pilonidal sinus

Clinical signs:

  • location: sacral area, namely in hairy men
  • caused by chronic friction and accumulation of the hairs in skin sinus
  • surrounded by the inflammation

Histology:

Inflammation, remnants of the epidermis within the wall of the siunus, hairs. Sometimes only fibrous wall with hairs can be found.

7.2.5  Pseudocyst of the auricle

Clinical signs:

  • location: cartilage of the auricle

Histology:

Tiny pseudocyst surrounded by the cartilage of the auricle.

7.2.6  Parasitic cyst

Histology:

The cyst contains a fluid and parts of a parasite (eg. cysticercosis, where the size of the cyst may be up to 2 cm).
